Our Story

Pocket Square Clothing (PSC) has been passionately creating well designed accessories and formal apparel since 2011. Nestled in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, PSC takes immense pride in creating most of our products in-house at our 60 year old LA Based manufacturer Top Hand MFG. With no formal fashion training, founders Rodolfo and Andrew sought to create a lifestyle brand beyond clothing. Starting with the bow tie, their collection now features menswear staples, a plethora of accessories including unisex eyewear, shirting, and custom suiting services. This is their effort to tell a story, to inspire and be inspired, and to create a powerful connection through timeless pieces.

Philosophy:

The vision is simple: to become a vehicle for the individual exploration of style through well made and designed accessories and apparel. Pocket Square Clothing embraces the idea that style comes down to one’s composure and being, the way one carries himself. The mission is to create a collection of visual and artistic accents, accents that then serve as to punctuate and project personality. The brand is inspired by the idea that everyone can move forward in life through style and etiquette, and the belief that clothing is a language that communicates one’s individualistic qualities. Art, music, entertainment, architecture, and culture define the PSC lifestyle. The brand delves into realms of Urban, Vintage, and Chic Style. Pocket Square Clothing looks to create a brand beyond just clothing, and become a network of individuals who love clothing and use it to help decipher their style.

Why name it Pocket Square?

A pocket square, in its humble beginnings, was derived from the handkerchief, which was used for personal hygiene. The modern day pocket square has since shifted to an iconic piece used as a subtle accent to distinguish one self. Deconstructing the significance of the pocket square, Pocket Square Clothing sought to take the iconic piece’s symbolism and apply it to the broader scheme of clothing design.

Made in Los Angeles:

Pocket Square Clothing takes pride in its domestic manufacturing and attention to detail. Using traditional techniques, the majority of our product is carefully handcrafted by some of the oldest remaining craftsmen in the heart of Los Angeles. Each piece comes with a narrative and fully handcrafted vintage inspired packaging. The brand follows the mantra that quality and attention to detail is key.

PSC Purchases Top Hand Manufacturing:

In 2019 we purchased our 60 year old formal accessories, hospitality uniform, and apparel manufacturer (Top Hand Manufacturing) to ensure the continued production of our Los Angeles made ties, pocket squares, bow ties, and clothing.

A Conversation With The Founders

1. What is the history and background of the line?

Pocket Square Clothing was established in 2011 as a men’s accessory brand. We were roommates (Andrew Cheung and Rodolfo Ramirez) in college. With no formal fashion training but with an architectural and business background at USC, we sought to create a lifestyle brand beyond clothing, and we found a niche in the industry and decided to run with it. Ironically we didn’t start with pocket squares, but rather started the company by making pre-tied bow ties. Deconstructing the significance of the pocket square, Pocket Square Clothing sought to take the iconic piece’s symbolism and apply it to the broader scheme of clothing design. Every suit or garment that was to be made had to offer its wearer something unique. Patterns and textures were our way of achieving that.

Today, the brand is a reflection of the ideals behind the Urban Gentleman. Our brand is our effort to tell a story, to inspire and be inspired, and to create a powerful connection with people through timeless pieces. To date we feature a collection of handcrafted bow ties, skinny neckties, pocket squares and custom suits. Our Flagship store is a multi-brand Menswear concept space that features over 30 Los Angeles lifestyle based brands and designers. Our offerings at the store range from custom furniture, suiting, neck wear, eye wear, basics and more.

2. What is it best known for?

Pocket Square Clothing is most known for our brand aesthetic and the lifestyle that we project. In terms of our products, we’re really known for using unique fabrics and prints such as florals on our accessories. We’re not afraid to experiment with our designs and incorporate color and textures. We’re also not afraid to work with anyone, fashion or not. We’ve been building a creative community within Los Angeles. At its core we are an entity of Creatives, Musicians, Designers, Artists and Talented Gentlemen, who care about the way we look. You’ll see many of us working frequently together on collaborations and editorials.

3. Why did you start it in the first place?

We started Pocket Square Clothing three years ago as a vehicle to explore our own individual styles. We went in knowing nothing about the industry and designing accessories was frankly something we were very interested in. It just so happened that men’s accessories started making a huge resurgence, and we found ourselves in a nice niche to build the brand around in a growing menswear industry. Los Angeles is also one of the best places to start a fashion company, and we were fortunate enough to find some local manufacturers. We were looking to offer something that no one had seen before, and the menswear community really took onto the brand. What you see is very much reflective of who we are personally.

Our vision is simple: to become a vehicle for the individual exploration of style. We embrace the idea that style comes down to one’s composure and being, the way one carries himself. Our mission is to create a collection of visual and artistic accents, accents that then serve to punctuate and project personality. PSC is inspired by the idea that everyone can move forward in life through style and etiquette, and the belief that clothing is a language that communicates one’s individualistic qualities. Art, music, entertainment, architecture, and culture define the PSC lifestyle. The brand’s design philosophy is influenced by urban, vintage, and modern aesthetics. We wanted to become about a network of individuals who love clothing and use it to help decipher their style.

4. What are some of your bestselling items at the moment?

Since we mostly carry suiting accessories, our ties and pocket squares are definitely our best sellers. With that said, anything floral in our collection has been a hit since we started. We launched our made to measure suiting and shirting this year in our flagship store in LA, and that’s really taken off for us with guys who are looking to customize their wardrobe with us.

5. Who is your customer?

Being a menswear brand, we’ve been surprised at how diverse our customer is. While we target men specifically who are looking to build their wardrobe and elevate their style, we’ve had everyone from teenagers, women, and older individuals who are fans of our brand come purchase our products. Good design and fashion is a universal language.

6. What are the price ranges and where is it sold?

We try to keep our pricing as approachable as possible without compromising quality and design. We are carried in over 200 boutique retailers worldwide, but our flagship store in Downtown Los Angeles houses our entire collection and made to measure suiting and shirting.

Pocket Squares $26
Ties $56
Bow Ties $56
Custom Shirts $150
Custom Suits $850

7. Why do you make everything locally?

We take a lot of pride in manufacturing our goods locally. It allows us contribute to our local economy as well as empower our local community of designers and makers. We pay a lot of attention to detail and the quality of our designs and products, so being able to see our designs from concept to finished product is very important to us. Using traditional techniques, everything is carefully handcrafted by some of the oldest remaining craftsmen here in the heart of Los Angeles. Our fabrics are sourced from vintage, deadstock, or locally made and printed in Los Angeles. The brand follows the mantra that American made is better, and that quality and attention to detail is key.

8. How big is each collection and how often do you offer new merchandise?

We don’t follow the traditional fashion calendar where we offer a collection for every season. Instead we’ve split all of our product into six core collections that have new designs added to them every month. The collections have their own inspired aesthetics such as the Classic, Workwear, Floral, Ice Cream, Emissary, and Collaborative collections. In total we have over 200 different styles of ties, pocket squares, bow ties, lapel flowers, and tie clips.

9. Why are accessories so appealing in your opinion?

Accessories are one of the most versatile and forgiving pieces in your wardrobe and the easiest item to add to an outfit that can completely elevate a look or change a mood. For someone who may not be well versed on style or fashion, accessories are also a great starting point for anyone looking to improve on their individual style without breaking the bank.

10. What is next for the brand?

We are working on a bag collection and looking to expand into custom women's suiting. Our expansion into women's suiting is our effort to widen our market and offer our women contingency PSC tailored and designed garments. Ready to wear suiting and shirting are in the process of being designed and is expected to be released spring of 2018.

11. What sets PSC apart from other brands?

Every brand out there also has their own take on fashion. You can say that we have great design aesthetics, tailoring, quality, interesting fabrics and prints, and a “Made in LA” tag. But put that all aside, and I think you’ll find what actually sets us apart is the unique lifestyle we created that really builds a connection with our consumers. We like to say that we’re not trying to sell a product, but rather an idea that people want to be a part of. Our goal is to educate, inspire, and create.

12. Why should readers check out your brand?

We have a lot to offer in menswear and lifestyle, and we strive to become an additional resource or inspiration for many on their individual exploration of style.
